The practice is rooted in teachings of the holy Baal Shem Tov, who instructed that Shir HaMaalot (Tehillim) be written along with additional sacred words he composed, to be placed above the baby’s head as a source of Hashem's protection.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe also emphasized this well-known Jewish custom to hang notes or amulets with names, verses, and “Shir HaMaalot,” each according to their community’s tradition. These practices are considered a segula (spiritual remedy) for protection during childbirth and the recovery period, ensuring health and longevity for both mother and baby.
The Rebbe’s words highlight this practice:
“It is known and widely practiced among Jewish communities to hang notes (or amulets) with verses, Tehillim, and Hashem's names in the mother’s home as a segula for protection during and after childbirth, ensuring safety and ease for the mother and the newborn.”This tradition is also cited in sacred texts such as Sefer Raziel HaMalach and referenced widely across Jewish communities.
